Renovate, reshape or remove

Fall is often when you look more closely at your swimming pool and realize you need to make some changes.

Perhaps the decking is cracking and peeling, or the interior needs resurfacing. Maybe you want to redo the deck or add a waterfall or fireplace.

Maybe you’re no longer using your pool. The kids have moved out of the house, and you now own one of the thousands of home pools in Arizona where no one dips even a toe in the water anymore. Maybe you want to get rid of it or change it dramatically. Is that even possible?

Pool builders say that many pool owners want to make cosmetic changes like building waterfalls or fireplaces along the edges of pools or adding tile trim inside the pool rim.

When it’s time to redo the pool deck, builders say, many people choose pavers over concrete; another common choice is tumbled travertine tiles. Whatever the decking, it will heat up in summer, but lighter-colored materials are slightly cooler. It’s probably best to redo the deck in a paving material to match your patio, or you’ll probably have to do the patio as well.

You can actually renovate the pool in other structural ways to make it more attractive. How about adding what builders call a Baja sun shelf? This is an enlarged entry step at the shallow end where sunbathers can relax on lounge chairs nearly covered with water.

Another recent trend is for homeowners to remove their diving boards and make their pools shallower at the diving end, according to Doug Sydenham of Postorino Pools in Scottsdale. This renovation can appeal to those with children or grandchildren or someone who wants to swim laps but always wants to be able to touch the bottom. As a bonus, it can be safer to get rid of the diving area, because many older pools with diving boards aren’t deep enough to meet current building standards.

According to pool companies, for a depth change like this, the pool’s floor is chipped out and drains are relocated or stubbed up. Then, an aggregate base of crushed rock is put in and compacted. A steel grid connects the remaining parts of the old shell with the new area and shotcrete is sprayed into the grid. Finally, the pool is resurfaced.

You can also make a pool smaller, believe it or not. It’s not cheap to do, but you can move the walls in on a big pool to create more deck space. Many times this requires removing all the walls to change the configuration.

Some fixes like these can actually cut water and heating expenses for the pool a little bit — but certainly not enough to pay you back for the changes during your years in the house.

To end utility and maintenance costs forever, you can remove the pool completely. That may sound like an extreme measure, and it can be pricey.

The cost will depend on the size of your pool, but it also depends on access. Can an earthmover be moved easily into your yard? One demolition company told us it can cost from $2,700 to $13,000 for the entire removal. Afterward, landscaping and fencing might have to be moved or replaced to accommodate the work.

Removing an in-ground pool is not easy, and sometimes it is never completely “gone.” Here’s what happens. Often a pool company will subcontract the demolition. Be sure that the contractor has checked with your city to get any permits required. Cities vary in their regulations about how the removal must be done. The utilities — typically water and power — must be turned off.

The water has to be drained out of the pool, of course. Then the demolition contractor digs a 5-foot by 5-foot hole in the bottom of the pool that gets filled with an aggregate base of crushed rock. This will provide drainage from rainfall or other water after the pool is filled in.

Generally, cities require that the top 2 feet of the pool walls plus the decking be removed. Often the demolition contractor will dump this debris into the hole rather than carrying it away, if the owner agrees to it. Finally, top soil is brought in to cover the site, and the area is graded so a homeowner can relandscape.

Craig O’Grady of Desert Sun Pools, which specializes in renovations and building, says he will do the job only if the entire pool is removed. The concern is that a homeowner who later sells the home might not disclose to a buyer that a partial pool is still in the backyard.

There might be legal problems if a new owner tries to build something in the backyard, such as another pool or a villa, and then discovers a carcass of a dead pool underground.

So, unless your pool is in terrible shape, you might consider renovating instead. After all, an attractive swimming pool can add value to the price of your home when you sell.

Best Buy Metals — a roof over your head

Its business is accomplishment all-steel roofing, as able-bodied as both animate and vinyl siding.

“It’s a actual solid aggregation with a acceptable acceptability of carrying accomplished actual at a abundant price,” said Nathan Libbey, carnality admiral of Best Buy Metals. And Libbey is appreciative of the ability of his advisers because they specialize mainly in this specific field. “Steel metal beam is our capital business ... It’s our focus.”

Isaac Libbey is the owner, but several of the added 11 Libbey accouchement advice their brother run the ancestors business.

Working in architecture back he was 16, Isaac Libbey acclimated abounding of the beam articles accessible and became accustomed with how these articles captivated up and which ones formed the best.

“In fact, a lot of of the ancestors is in the architecture industry,” Nathan Libbey said.

Not alone does Best Buy Metals advertise in Southeastern Tennessee and Northern Georgia, it sells its artefact beyond the country, as able-bodied as the blow of the apple through its online presence. Almost 60 percent of its audience are contractors and 40 percent are alone homeowners. The aggregation provides in-store training to individuals in the anatomy of booklets, videos and installing technicians to acknowledgment questions.

“We action a abounding 40-year agreement for our metal roofing, which historically will endure abundant best than that,” Nathan Libbey said. A archetypal coffer roof alone lasts about 10 to 18 years on average, in comparison. Metal roofing, however, commonly has amount almost alert as abundant as shingles in the past. But that’s area Best Buy Metals can advice abate the costs because barter can buy anon from the architect after traveling through a banker or banker to accession the final cost. The amount of oil, acclimated in the assembly of shingles, aswell has gone up, but abundant added than the amount of steel. “We accomplish it appropriate actuality in our assembly facility. And it’s stronger and longer-lasting, as able-bodied as Energy Star rated ... Having an Energy Star appraisement is a big difference.”

The animate beam actual that Best Buy Metals produces has a bowl acrylic blanket which is at minimum 25 percent reflective. Shingles, on the added hand, according to Nathan Libbey, blot heat. Animate beam is wind resistant, has a Class A blaze rating, which bureau this blazon of beam will not abutment a flame, and aswell is abundant stronger than shingles. Homeowners accept gotten break on their allowance premiums because they installed a animate roof, NathanLibbey said.

The added allowances of animate is that it won’t able and yet is stylish. Spanish asphalt has been the abiding admired appearance nationwide, forth with the Tuff-Rib, which is a three-foot advanced panel, as able-bodied as the a lot of economical. Best Buy Metals carries 18 altered colors in 20 altered designs, so Nathan Libbey is abiding barter can acquisition the appropriate blush and architecture to bout their absolute decor.

“Fifteen years ago, the technology didn’t abide to reflect heat,” Nathan Libbey said. “Today, this technology can accumulate your attic 20 to 60 degrees cooler, consistent in lower cooling bills.”

Plus, at Best Buy Metals, aggregate is customized to the exact fit needed.

“Cut to the inch,” Nathan Libbey said. “And aforementioned day or next day delivery. In fact, 98 percent of the time, it’s produced the aforementioned day. This allows us to accept abundant chump service.”

And the abundance isn’t a factor. Whether a chump orders one section of beam or balustrade or 100, the amount per basal is the same.

“We don’t allegation barter a baby adjustment fee,” Nathan Libbey said. “We’d rather just action a aggressive amount up front.”

Senior accessible area coffer admiral said abounding companies beyond sectors accept been afflicted by the anemic rupee. Their acceptation bill and and adopted accommodation claim accountability went up in 2011-12. Lenders would attending at a amalgamation including giving added time for claim and a transaction holiday.

Nitco’s absolute liabilities rose to about Rs900 crore at the end of March from Rs596 crore at the end of March 2011. Its abiding borrowings went up to Rs300.6 crore at end-March 2012 from Rs244.2 crore a year before. Major lenders to the aggregation cover Punjab National Bank, State Coffer of India and Syndicate Bank. Talwar said the aggregation had been sourcing vitrified tiles from units in China. It has back up a assemblage in Morbi, Gujarat, for authoritative these. The bulb is accepted become operational in October.

Gross sales grew to Rs959 crore in FY12 from Rs729 crore in FY11. But, the basal band took a knock, with accident of Rs55 crore in FY12 as adjoin net accumulation of Rs26 crore in FY11. The burden on profits will abide for the next two to three quarters, he said.

Rating bureau CARE, in a address this March, said the ratings abide to acquire backbone from the company’s clue record, able cast name and advanced administration network. The ratings are accountable by the aggressive and burst attributes of the asphalt industry and Nitco’s assurance on suppliers abroad, in the accomplishments of authoritative uncertainties.

What Do Your Floors Say About Your Store?

If there is annihilation retailers and accessibility abundance owners accept abstruse from the bread-and-butter downturn, it’s that they accept to do aggregate they can to acceptable their barter and accumulate them loyal. And it can all alpha with the aboriginal acumen a chump has of a retail location.

For instance, a analysis by Harris Interactive on account of Cintas in January 2011 asked 1,000 U.S. adults over the age of 18 about what would abnormally appulse their acumen of a store. Poor chump account was of advance top on the list, but some ability be afraid to apprentice that cleanliness issues were aswell absolutely important.

For instance, 95% of those surveyed adumbrated that bedraggled restrooms would abnormally appulse their acumen of a store; this was carefully followed by abhorrent odors, at 92%.

The actualization of floors was aswell top on the list. Eighty-six percent of those surveyed adumbrated that bedraggled floors would absolutely be a agency that would could cause them to catechism whether they capital to boutique at a store.

Many in the retail and able charwoman industries accept that attic actualization is even added important than this analysis indicates. In fact, a lot of charwoman experts accept floors are the aboriginal affair visitors apprehension if entering a retail facility, and that the aboriginal consequence generated by the cleanliness and actualization of the floors produces a abiding assessment of that facility.

The absorbing affair is that able attic affliction is not necessarily difficult. In fact, it can be performed at a lower amount than abounding abundance owners/managers realize. If performed appropriately with avant-garde chemicals and technologies, attic affliction can aswell be environmentally responsible, consistent in apple-pie and advantageous floors that aswell makes barter feel welcome.

The aboriginal footfall in able accessibility abundance attic affliction is analytical your attic affliction goals. This assay in fact starts with you. Ask yourself how you wish your floors to look. Of advance you wish them to be clean—that should go after saying—but do you aswell wish a high-gloss shine? This may crave added time and effort. Some retailers and added types of accessories accept a high-gloss, ‘wet look’ flash is acute in adjustment to present the blazon of angel they wish for their location.

Next, visually appraise your floors. One banker activate that his store’s floors captivated up almost able-bodied to bottom cartage except at the entrance. Fine cracks breadth developing in that area, which was aswell the a lot of decrepit allotment of the floor. Installing an able carpeting arrangement helped abate this soiling, which was aswell accidental to the abasement of the attic itself.

Identify botheration areas. Segment the attic into areas that are heavily trafficked and about the a lot of decrepit against those areas that accept alone abstinent or actual little bottom cartage and soiling. Added accomplishment will acutely be bare in the added trafficked/soiled areas.

With your attic assay complete, abundance advisers can activate to adapt a attic affliction aliment program. Having a academic affairs in place, in writing, is actual important. It defines what attic affliction tasks will be performed, by whom, and when, ensuring that these tasks are performed on a set schedule.

Next to able matting, which can advice accumulate soils outside, the two a lot of important apparatus of able attic affliction are the chemicals and accessories acclimated to clean.

The acceptable account for storeowners that wish to use ‘green’ environmentally-friendly charwoman products, is that there are able blooming attic strippers, cleaners and finishes available. The bad account is that some of these blooming chemicals accomplish bigger than others, and some are still added cher than accepted products.

In some cases, altered actinic articles may accept to be activated to see how able-bodied they accomplish on your accurate floor. However, in abounding situations, an adroit janitorial benefactor will apperceive what blooming attic affliction articles are accessible and will be able to advice retailers baddest the articles that will accomplish best on their floors. Also, to ensure that you are ‘cleaning Green,’ analysis that the articles you baddest are certified by beneath the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) DfE program, or through EcoLogo, GreenSeal, or a agnate organization.

Major renovations beneath way at Bossier City mall

Shoppers at Pierre Bossier Capital anon may apprehension a altered attending and feel at the 600,000-square-foot arcade center.

The capital is ability an autogenous anaplasty that includes new styles of basement areas, ceramics asphalt attic in the aliment cloister and accepted areas and an all-embracing lighter and fresher environment, according to buyer Rouse Properties.

"As we enhance the chump experience, the ambition for us is to affix added with that chump and accept them absorb added time at our centers added often," Rouse Properties' Chief Operating Officer Benjamin Schall said.

The multimillion-dollar renovations are getting done afterwards hours to accomplish the action seamless for the customer, he said. Construction is accepted to blanket in November.

Some of the better changes shoppers may apprehension in the advancing months are new acquisition areas — some in a café style, others with lounge chairs and some advised for families with children. All will be able with Wi-Fi access.

"When you bout that with the aesthetics, ... it will accomplish it abundant added agreeable for the alone and the ancestors atmosphere that is the capital allure of the mall," J.C. Penney abundance administrator Lon Hawkins said, apropos to the Wi-Fi access.

The capital is a "desirable" breadth for bartering business with its adjacency to Interstate 20 and Airline Drive, he said, and any advancement to the capital blueprint will crop absolute after-effects for all the humans involved.

While the aggregate of the renovations are inside, Schall said, Rouse Properties affairs to amend some exoteric appearance as well, such as the capital entrances and directional parking lot signs to the beyond stores.

Yasmine Altaf, administrator of the Fashion Jewelry kiosk abreast the mall's aliment court, said she is borderline how the renovations could appulse business. But she is optimistic. "Renovation is consistently acceptable for anywhere."

Renovations such as those beneath way at the capital do not about access the amount of a building, Bossier Tax Assessor Bobby Edmiston said. "Unless they're abacus aboveboard feet, it doesn't about affect the value."

Pierre Bossier Capital is one of the aboriginal Rouse Properties getting adapted as allotment of an accomplishment to advance the capital acquaintance for barter and retailers alike. The close owns 31 malls throughout the nation.

"It's a bazaar we actual abundant accept in, and we're aflame about the approaching of breadth Pierre Bossier is headed," Schall said.

And while the renovations are getting accommodating with those at Virginia College — a new addressee in the above Service Merchandise space, they were not planned to time with college's.

The capital work, however, will account students, Virginia College campus President Lisa Ramirez said. "We accept a apprentice lounge. But sometimes if you're in an breadth for a continued aeon of time, you wish to be able to abstraction at your own clip or in a airy environment. This gives them a altered ambiance appropriate next door."

White powder is mailed to Pizza Patrón restaurant in Fort Worth

White powder, later determined to be harmless, was sent to Pizza Patrón restaurants in Fort Worth and Georgia on Tuesday -- the same day that the national pizza chain launched a controversial promotion giving free pepperoni pizzas to customers who order in Spanish.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the owner/manager of the Pizza Patrón at 301 NW 28th St. brought an envelope containing white powder to the Fort Worth Police Department, prompting police to alert the Fire Department.

An analysis determined that the powder was Sheetrock dust, Fire Capt. M.R. Skains said.

Andy Gamm, brand director for Dallas-based Pizza Patrón, said that hours before the Fort Worth incident, he learned that an envelope containing white powder had also been mailed to a restaurant in Atlanta. That owner also took the envelope to police, and authorities quickly determined that it was ceramic tile powder, Gamm said.

Gamm said he has no doubt that the stores were targeted because of the national Spanish-order promotion.

"Obviously it's an easy way to disrupt what's going on at the stores," he said. "This becomes the story. It becomes what people talk about rather than the promotion. No question it's deliberate. We've got our eyes and ears open right now to hear about any more situations like that."

Gamm said the company has received some criticism since announcing the pizza promotion.

"We've got lots of phone calls, a lot of e-mails," he said. "We've even got a few handwritten love letters people put in the mail. I didn't know people wrote letters anymore."

Gamm said the company has no regrets.

"It doesn't change our focus on what we're doing," he said. "We still think this promotion is a good idea. We don't apologize for it at all."

Gamm said the 26-year-old company had always focused on providing a uniquely Hispanic experience.

"When we create a promotion, it's always designed to strengthen the relations we have with our Hispanic customers," he said. "About 70 percent of our customers are Hispanic."

Gamm said employees will coach non-Spanish-speaking customers on ordering their pizza so they can get the deal, too.

"We're always trying to strengthen and resonate with our core customers. In this case, we thought it would be fun to reach out and create a bridge to non-Hispanics who live in the neighborhood," he said.

Gamm said he has alerted other franchisees about the two incidents and instructed employees not to open any mail.

"We've got to take it seriously as with anything," he said. "I hope the motivation is to disrupt and there isn't anything serious in any of these envelopes. I hope we don't find any more. I'm most concerned for people at the stores who just show up to make pizza and have to deal with things like that."

Skains, supervisor of the Fire Department's hazardous material team, said that firefighters sporadically respond to calls involving suspicious powder but that the powder is rarely harmful.

Citaro Euro VI

A diesel powered service bus from Mercedes Benz holds the record of being the first such bus to be Euro VI compliant. The Citaro Euro VI is the cleanest running diesel powered bus being offered with Euro VI engines thus meeting stringent exhaust emission standards. What sets this bus apart from the rest is the fact that besides meeting high level of emission standards its fuel consumption too is reduced by 5% while oil and AdBlue consumption is also at a new reduced level. The Mercedes Benz Citaro is eco friendly, economical and safe to be used for regular bus services. This bus comes at a time when demand is high for procurement of service vehicles which meet the new Euro VI standards.

The bus with Euro VI compliance offers a smoother ride, a better acoustic experience for both driver and passengers besides lower engine sound. The company has also developed two completely new engines based on the company motto of BlueEfficiency Power.

The first such engine comprises of an in line six cylinder OM 936 with 7.7 liter displacement and the second is an OM 470 with 10.7 liter displacement. These two engines are the ultimate where acceleration and power are concerned. They offer smooth running and efficient maintenance. High level of fuel efficiency apart, these engines also consume oil which is at 50% less than their predecessors. The new engines have technical designs that include crossflow cylinder with four valves per cylinder which offers ultra fast gas exchange process. The cylinder head and crank case are joined together with 6 screws per cylinder offering better stability and rigidity.

Another great leap forward for the global bestseller among regular-service buses: the Mercedes-Benz Citaro has just extended its lead over the competition with a completely new engine generation. This makes the Citaro the first regular-service bus to be fitted and supplied with Euro VI engines as standard,We offer you the top quality plasticmoulds design and the world's cleanest-running diesel regular-service bus. A raft of further innovations have reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions,Award Winning solarpanel and heat pumps for electricity and heating. successfully offsetting the extra weight involved in meeting the Euro VI exhaust emissions standard. Mercedes-Benz has also continued to further enhance the Citaro in many other ways,We are professional canada goose jackets for women online sale shop. to create the world's most future-proof, eco-friendly, economical and safe regular-service bus.

Special importance is given to the environmental footprint of regular-service buses, because these vehicles are very often used in areas that are particularly sensitive to environmental damage. For city centres, suburbs and the fast-growing urban areas in Europe and far beyond, environmental protection is a top priority alongside economic considerations when it comes to the purchase and operation of regular-service buses.

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro opens up a whole new chapter in this area by successfully meeting both environmental and economic objectives, as the first regular-service bus delivered to customers with a Euro VI-compliant engine. This has been achieved with an entirely new engine generation from Mercedes-Benz.Buy high quality bedding and bed linen from Yorkshire Linen.

This was the ideal time for Mercedes-Benz again to take the lead in the engine development stakes, with several calls for tenders for procurement contracts stipulating Euro VI as mandatory. Incentive schemes are also now in place for meeting the new exhaust emissions standard.

The powerful performance of these engines has also allowed the developers in almost all cases to provide longer axle ratios than in previous engines. To take just two examples, the standard axle ratio in the rigid regular-service bus is now i=6.21 rather than i=7.37, and in the rigid intercity coach i=5.77 instead of i=6.21. This significantly lowers engine speed and noise levels, as well as reducing the number of comfort-impairing gear changes. The concept of indoorpositioningsystem (RTLS) is fast catching up in industries.

As well as being able to feel the new performance features of these engines, the driver can also see them, with the green area of the revolution counter marking the high-economy engine speed range, starting as low as 900 rpm in the Citaro.

So along with even higher fuel economy, the new Euro VI Citaro also offers smoother running and provides a more agreeable acoustic experience for driver and passengers alike, thanks to the lower engine speeds, plus optimised noise insulation and the fuel injection process.

BWI airport becomes art gallery to celebrate human rights

Some of the bravest people in the world can be found at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic. Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa. The Dalai Lama.

These and many other figures are featured in a photo exhibit organized to honor human-rights defenders around the world.

Part of the airport's upper concourse, just off the main atrium of the international terminal, has been transformed into a photo gallery to display the traveling exhibit "Speak Truth to Power," which runs through May 31.

The exhibit was organized by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, a Washington-based nonprofit organization that was formed in 1968 in memory of the former U.S. senator and attorney general, who was assassinated that year at age 42.

It is based on a book written by Kerry Kennedy, a daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and president of the RFK Center. All of the black-and-white images were taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams.

Kerry Kennedy's book has been adapted for the stage by playwright Ariel Dorfman. Titled "Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark," the play was presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2000, broadcast on PBS and subsequently produced around the world.

Since it was first displayed at Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art in 2000, the photo exhibit has traveled to more than 20 cities on four continents. The BWI stop marks one of the first times it has been on view in the Mid-Atlantic since the inaugural showing.

"My father once said that 'those with the courage to enter the moral conflict will find themselves with companions in every corner of the world," said Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, former lieutenant governor of Maryland and an RFK Center board member. "Through this exhibition, we ensure that these courageous human-rights defenders will find companions in Baltimore and beyond."

The free exhibit gives viewers an opportunity to learn about 53 men and women who faced imprisonment, torture and, in some cases, death, for confronting issues ranging from poverty and domestic violence to police brutality and sex slavery. A brief biography accompanies each portrait. In some cases, such as Tutu's fight against South Africa's apartheid system, the figures have received worldwide attention. Others are less well known.

The exhibit's goal, organizers say, is to show that that people around the globe are working to create a "just and peaceful" world.

Adams traveled extensively to create the portraits. In some, his subjects stare directly at the camera, and only the face or part of a face is shown. In others, they are shown standing or seated. Clothes and backdrops help depict the diversity of the subjects.

On a recent day, the large, striking photographs caught the attention of people waiting to meet someone arriving on a plane or walking from the international terminal to catch a domestic flight. Some stopped just for a minute or two; others lingered and read the biographies and quotes from Robert Kennedy.

Many American airports display artwork, but not many do so to the degree that BWI does.

For many years, the directors of BWI have used both permanent and temporary art exhibits to help create "a strong, valuable sense of place," said airport spokesman Jonathan Dean.

Examples range from color photos of Baltimore and Washington to a large glass crab that has moved around the airport.

One of the largest permanent exhibits is local artist David Hess' "Momentum Study" sculpture, located in the rental car facility. The "daily garage" features ceramic tile murals that mark each level of the garage.

The RFK Center's exhibit is the latest in a series of temporary exhibits at the airport. Others have included paintings from the U.S. Air Force depicting military and space program aircraft and historic aviation events, work from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and five exhibits by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.

With millions of passengers passing through each year, BWI is a fitting location for exhibits such as "Speak Truth to Power," representatives say.

2 bodies found at residence

Two unidentified bodies have been found at a Mississippi residence associated with a man suspected of abducting a Tennessee woman and her three young daughters, who are believed to be in "extreme danger," authorities said Saturday.

FBI spokesman Joel Siskovic said the bodies were found late Friday night or early Saturday morning in a residence associated with Adam Mayes, 35.

Mayes is charged in Tennessee with abducting Jo Ann Bain and her daughters. He has been described by authorities as "armed and extremely dangerous."

Siskovic said authorities on the scene were not able to positively identify the bodies. He would not say if the bodies were children.

The missing girls are 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain, 12-year-old Alexandria and 14-year-old Adrienne. They were last seen April 27 in Hardeman County, Tenn., which is about 70 miles east of Memphis. The woman's husband reported her missing and her vehicle was found abandoned.

Authorities were still trying to determine if Jo Ann Bain went with Mayes willingly. He was last seen Tuesday in Guntown, Miss., about 80 miles southeast of Hardeman County, Tenn.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service announced Saturday a reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the location of the missing victims and the arrest of Mayes.

Siskovic said the bodies were found in a residence, but it wasn't clear if it was a house, mobile home or apartment. He also wasn't sure if the residence belonged to Mayes or an acquaintance. Siskovic said the bodies were found in Guntown, north of Tupelo. Lee County coroner Carolyn Green said the bodies were found outside Guntown in Union County.

Siskovic said authorities talked to Mayes early on in the investigation, but he fled when they tried to contact him again. The FBI says they were not immediately aware of Mayes having a criminal record.

Authorities had said that Mayes could be in Mississippi but that he has ties to Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

"Information has been developed during the investigation that the children may be in extreme danger. Warrants for kidnapping are being issued for Adam Mayes, who is considered armed and extremely dangerous," Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said in a news release Saturday.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert on Saturday morning, and Tennessee authorities had also issued an alert.

Authorities described Adrienne as a white girl with brown hair and eyes. She's 5 feet 4 inches tall and 129 pounds. Alexandria has brown hair and hazel eyes and is 5 feet tall and 105 pounds. Kyliyah has blonde hair and brown eyes and is 4 feet tall and 57 pounds.

Shape-shifting

Art circles throughout the nation and as far as Canada and Mexico recognize the remote, desert city of San Angelo as the host of the mecca of ceramic competitions.San Angelo's Ceramic Weekend of activities — a cooperative venture between the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, Angelo State University and the Old Chicken Farm Art Center that centers on the biennial San Angelo National Ceramic Competition and annual Ceramic Symposium — is April 19-23.

"It's highly regarded, not just in Texas, but throughout the nation," said Rick Hernandez, an Austin ceramist and retired director of the Texas Arts Commission. "When Howard (Taylor, SAMFA director) came to San Angelo and they chose to dedicate the museum to ceramics, that in itself was really unique and interesting.

"Before he started the Monarch Tile National Ceramic Competition (in 1986) when the company was still in San Angelo, the big festival everybody talked about was in Syracuse, and San Angelo kind of took that away from them and became this stellar competition because of the support they had from Monarch. Even after Monarch left (and the competition was renamed), it maintained its status."

Taylor said the ceramic contest this year drew about 1,400 pieces submitted by 515 artists from throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Of those entries, 106 works by 87 artists were selected to be exhibited, and the winners among those will be announced during the Nineteenth San Angelo National Ceramic Competition opening April 20.

Taylor estimated 2,000 people will attend the opening, and about 10,000 will view the exhibit during its two months at the museum.

"I think the first year, years ago, we had 200 people, then 300" at the opening, Taylor said. "We had 2,000 (attend) the last time, so that's incredible. It really has grown."

Hernandez credited the event's renown to Taylor's reputation in the art world.

"When he opened that museum, it was the biggest feature in The New York Times the day it opened," he said. "It has continued to have a reputation, and the extent is far beyond Angelo and Texas."

David Freeman, who teaches digital photography at South Texas College and publishes the magazine Voices of Art — distributed primarily in San Antonio and Austin — also praised Taylor for the event's success.

"Howard Taylor is just brilliant at what he does," Freeman said. "I think he's bringing a lot of new and genuine art that's fresh and conceptual and experimental — especially with the ceramics — to your region of Texas."

For artists, the competition "is just another arrow in your quill, and it just helps you advance because you've been recognized in a well-respected competition," Hernandez said.

The show is the biggest of its kind in America, Taylor said, and is unique because it draws both new and established artists to compete.

"The show has such a reputation and the jurors are always (such) leading people in the art world that even established artists like to get their name in front of them," Taylor said. Serious artists also strive to have their work shown at a museum, so appearing in the largest show of its kind in America is "the big-time," he said.

The museum prints a call for entries for the competition in national art magazines, including Ceramics Monthly, American Crafts and Clay Times. Those publications and others also feature write-ups about the competition.

Milwaukee/NARI Members Suggest Tweaking Your Home to Suit Your Aging in Place Needs

The number of homeowners between the ages of 55 and 74 is set to increase by 10.2 million from now until the year 2020 and nearly 90 percent of those 65 and over prefer to stay in their home as long as possible. This trend, called aging in place, has area remodelers busy with modifications that can help homeowners remain in their homes as long as possible.

Remodeler Rick Bartelt is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and owner of Bartelt - The Remodeling Resource in Delafield. “Homeowners don’t want to have a handicapped-accessible home when they don’t have any physical limitations. But we can make improvements so it isn’t a difficult transition if somebody were to have a serious situation develop. We encourage them to think about what will help them stay in that house down the road without making it seem institutional,” he said.

“Every home and every homeowner’s needs are different, but being aging in place specialists, we always make suggestions that could help in the future,” said Mark Brick, CR, CAPS, owner of B & E General Contractors, Glendale.

“Many things a homeowner can do are simple and inexpensive. There are subtle elements such as decorative grab bars in the bathroom, softer flooring in the kitchen, motion sensors that automatically turn lights off and on, timers on bathroom humidity/exhaust fans, and levers on doors and faucets to name a few,” Brick said.

“As specialists, we do suggest aging in place principals, but some homeowners are not ready. We urge them to look at the big picture whether they are in their 40s or their 60s,” said Jim Klappa, CGR, CAPS, owner of JDJ Builders, Inc., Greenfield.

“We address the current needs of the individual as well as what they will need in the future,” Klappa said. One of the best things when remodeling a bathroom is to have enough flexibility so if a wheelchair is needed, there is a proper turning radius. It is easy enough to do by taking space from a closet or an adjoining bathroom. If we are bumping out a wall, we can create enough space for a laundry room as well. A main floor laundry gets more important as a person starts to age,” he said.

There are many things on the market now that are more user-friendly to individuals of all abilities, such as front controls on stoves, microwaves in drawers, pull-out cabinets, and a plethora of lighting options.

“We’ll be seeing more of this as the population ages, even window treatments,” said Bartelt. He referred to the option of having shades that are not controlled by strings, but by side levers. “It’s easy for someone who has strength issues and it’s nice because you don’t have to worry about a toddler getting caught up in strings,” he said.

“Suppliers like plumbing and cabinetry manufacturers are making more products available,” said Brick, who has seen more of a presence of these things at builder and remodeler trade shows. “We are seeing more interest in this trend.”

Tooled up for Christmas

My garden gift wish-list doesn't change much from year to year.

At the top is a sizeable Lotto win, thanks, so I can bulk buy plants and rent a bloke in little shorts to plant them so The Partner can be put to work on more creative pursuits.

Second is a pair of really fabulous, high quality, top of the line secateurs that cost about $50, not $5, and that have a device attached which makes a high-pitched screaming noise when they are imprinted with any fingerprints but mine. If you have a friend or rellie who's a real gardener, even a pair without the screaming device will be hugely appreciated, I bet.

A six-pack of really girly garden gloves that a blokey landscaper would be ashamed to be seen in.

Garden belt. My former mother-in-law wore hers like other people wear watches, and she was, therefore, never caught short when something needed a quick cutback or a flower simply begged to be cut and brought inside.

A really good torch. You may have to force yourself to remember to do this, but prowling about the garden in the pitch dark with a torch is fascinating. Not only can you catch the criminals who are eating your basil and violating your strawberries, but you'll see everything else in (literally) a new light.

Temperature and rain gauge. These make great gifts for anyone who is interested in the weather.

And in the same gift box, a compass, thanks. It's always useful when you're about to plant something in a secluded corner and you're not quite sure exactly where north is, and if you're ever looking at a new property, you can't go past it.

It's always difficult buying decorative gifts for other people's gardens because tastes vary, but a posh copper garden light is hard to mess up. If the recipient doesn't absolutely love it he or she can camouflage it under a fatsia, say.

Pots and containers are easier. Surely everyone loves beautifully shaped urns and terracotta olive jars, whether empty or planted. If you are planting them, bear in mind that anything with a narrower neck than body will be reluctant to let go of its inhabitant when the time comes and one or the other may have to be sacrificed.

If you're on a shoestring budget and you want to make something for friends, try these ideas - dead simple, cheap as chips, and fun to make.

A container for garden string is a godsend. Get off to the supermarket to find a really attractive tin - golden syrup and treacle tins are examples, but it's totally a matter of personal taste. Eat (or decant) the contents, make a hole in the lid and hammer the edges to make sure there are no sharp bits. Put a ball of string inside, thread the end through the hole in the lid, put it on, and you're done.

Something with a slightly more creative bent is a shell garden. You need a terracotta plant saucer which you can either leave natural or paint a colour of your choice.

Buy one spectacular shell from a decor shop or bazaar and a string of shell beads. Collect other shells and pieces of driftwood from your nearest beach and arrange in your saucer. It makes a lovely, summery decoration for an outdoor dining table or to sit on a terrace or porch step.

No time for crafty stuff? Buy a vibrant ceramic tile and a gorgeous matching candle.

A tin watering can. I hate those bulbous plastic watering cans and they stick out like sore thumbs wherever you leave them in the garden. A tin model, though, looks lovely whether you're watering something with it or stuffing it full of flowers or foliage. You can also buy tiny little ones to make gifts with tiny little plants in them.

The same applies to a tin bucket. Lovely for the garden, and doubles as a suitable vessel for carting out hot ashes - this from someone who once used a plastic bucket, the bottom of which melted before I even got out of the living room and spilt hot ashes all over the rug. Oh, and a fire extinguisher, thanks.

Pittsfield's medals of honor

Sabic Innovative Plastics and Hi-Tech Mold & Tool teamed up to create 3,000 limited-edition, commemorative medallions to mark the 250th anniversary of Pittsfield’s incorporation.

Designed by Pittsfield 250 Steering Committee member Peter Drozd, one side of the medallion depicts an historic image of Park Square and the old elm tree; the other side commemorates the plastics industry’s long and innovative history in Pittsfield.

The medallions are made of Lexan, the virtually indestructible plastic invented in Pittsfield and produced by Sabic. While Sabic donated the plastic in three different and precise colors, Hi-Tech Mold & Tool donated one of its master mold frames to form the medallions.

The project took more than six months to complete from its initial concept to the completed product.

The medallions will be available at the city’s Welcome Back Reunion Weekend, July 1-4. Each will sell for $3 or for $5 with a display sleeve.

Quicksilver accelerates Horn River development

In yet another indication the Horn River shale gas field is almost ready for prime time, Houston-based Quicksilver Resources said Friday it has signed transportation deals that will allow it to scale up production from northeast British Columbia.

The Fort Worth-based unconventional gas producers, which was a pioneer in shale plays such as the Barnett field in Texas, said it has created an operating subsidiary to build the gathering pipelines needed to move the gas onto larger pipeline networks feeding Canada and the United States.

“We have the pieces in place to ensure that our vast resource capture will move out of the Horn River Basin to the west through the Spectra system and to the south through the Trans Canadian pipeline system,” Quicksilver chairman Toby Darden said in a statement. “We believe that creating this midstream entity will provide our lowest cost solution for gathering, treating and transporting our commodity to multiple sales points.”

The first part of the puzzle is a 32-kilometre gathering line, which will tie-in to the Spectra Westcoast system to the lower mainland and Pacific Northwest, expected to be operational in May.

On April 11, Quicksilver signed a deal with TransCanada Corp. to build a 100-kilometre tie-in into the Alberta Nova network which can alternatively access the TCPL main line to Eastern Canada and the larger North American grid.

In an interview, Quicksilver vice-president Rick Buterbaugh said current production of about 20 million cubic feet per day is constrained by limited access to third-party pipelines. The tie-ins will allow ensure adequate capacity to ramp up production to 2014 and beyond, he added. “This gives us multiple outlets for our gas,” he said. “We’re always looking for a variety of markets to move gas to, it’s the key to almost any of these developments.”

Horn River has been touted as one of the largest natural gas discoveries in North America, but its remote location near the Yukon border make it relatively expensive compared to other big shale plays in Pennsylvania and Texas that are closer to consuming markets.

The proliferation of low-cost shale production has pushed gas prices to the lowest levels in a decade, which put even more pressure on the economic viability of remote fields like Horn River.

Natural gas jumped seven cents in New York on Friday, to $4.21 US per million British thermal units, but Lower 48 storage levels remain well above the five-year averages.

The U.S. government issued a report Thursday that showed a larger-than-expected stock build of 28 billion cubic feet, which Barclay’s Capital analyst Tom Driscoll called “bearish” in a research report.

“We believe gas price risk remains to the downside as fundamentally the market remains oversupplied and U.S. production continues to grow.

Where other Horn River players like Encana and Apache Corp. have looked at liquefied natural gas exports off the West Coast as an alternative to traditional markets, Buterbaugh said low-cost pipeline transport remains a cornerstone of Quicksilver’s strategy.

The company will continue to pursue Horn River because it has the potential to quadruple the company’s proved reserves to about 12 trillion cubic feet. Despite low prices, Buterbaugh said he believes Horn River can be viable.

“Locking in low-cost transportation is all part of the equation of making Horn River competitive with the other plays,” he said.

Fort Worth's Quicksilver moving ahead in Canada

Fort Worth-based Quicksilver Resources said today that it has begun a “midstream” natural gas pipeline system to transport gas from the company’s wells in the Horn River Basin in far northeast British Columbia in Canada.

The “first piece” of the system was the construction of a 20-mile, 20-inch gas gathering line that is awaiting tie-in to a Spectra pipeline system and is expected to be operational in May, the natural gas and oil producer said. Once the tie-in and new gas compression facilities are completed, Quicksilver expects that production will be unrestricted from four existing gas wells cumulatively “capable of producing more than 30 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.”

Quicksilver has drilled four additional Horn River wells and “we expect to begin completion activities on those wells during the next winter drilling season,” said Rick Buterbaugh, vice president for investor relations and corporate planning.

Quicksilver, which gets most of its natural gas production from North Texas’ Barnett Shale, views its Horn River lease holdings of 130,000 net acres as a prime source of future company revenues.

“The company estimates that our acreage position holds more than 10 tcf (trillion cubic feet) of potential resources,” and could “more than quadruple our existing reserves,” Buterbaugh said.

Quicksilver has executed an agreement under which TransCanada Pipelines will  begin work on a 70-mile Horn River pipeline extension and Fortune Creek Meter Station to be located within Quicksilver’s acreage. The extension, to be completed in 2014, is expected to be a large 36-inch pipeline giving Quicksilver access to a major gas hub.
