Firm issues eco-friendly staff uniforms

JAKARTA: Soft drinks manufacturer and distributor Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (CCAI) has issued new environmentally friendly fabric-based uniforms to its employees.

About 10,000 of the company’s employees started wearing the new uniform in April. The uniforms are made from a combination of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and organic cotton.

“The uniforms are made from 50 percent recycled PET and 50 percent organic cotton. Every employee has received three uniforms,” CCAI president director Peter Kelly said.

CCAI collaborated with PT Quicksilver Indonesia to design the uniforms.

“The uniform is not only safe to wear, but also comfortable,” PT Quicksilver Indonesia’s chief product executive Rahmat Sudrajat said.

The company said the PET was made from recycled plastic bottles.

However, because no manufacturer in the country has the capability to produce yarn from plastic bottles, CCAI shipped the raw materials to China for production. At least five bottles are needed to produce one shirt, the company said.

“We hope that this innovation will trigger more demand from organizations and encourage the recycling industry in Indonesia,” CCAI business services director Bruce Waterfield said. (JP/aaa)
