Jorma Kaukonen, still soulful and still on the road—including a stop at the Cedar Cultural Center

On the heels of Hot Tuna’s Steady As She Goes (Red House Records), the indefatigable Jorma Kaukonen comes to Cedar Cultural Center on May 6 for a solo show on acoustic guitar and vocals. Barry Mitterhoff accompanies on mandolin.

Stars in My Crown marked Kaukonen’s 2007 debut on Red House, followed by River of Time in 2009. Three successful albums into the relationship, it’s a smart match of artist and label. For which fans of one of rock’s most readily identifiable guitarists, not mention intriguing singer-songwriter are profoundly grateful. The famed San Francisco Sound yielded enduring names on guitar; the foremost being Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Quicksilver Messenger Service’s John Cippolina, and Kaukonen, playing lead with Jefferson Airplane, then heading up Hot Tuna.

Steady As She Goes, Hot Tuna’s first studio album in 20 years, kills. Jorma Kaukonen and stalwart Airplane/Hot Tuna bassist extraordinaire Jack Casady play off each other as beautifully as they ever have, joined by Barry Mitterhoff and Skoota Warner (drums) with multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell and vocalist Teresa Williams. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady wax more economic than in the old days when they launched jamming forays like Kaukonen’s “Sea Child” and Snooks Eaglin’s “Come Back Baby.”

The faithful need not fret. Odds are, in concert, there’ll be, along with material from Steady As She Goes, at least a couple numbers on which the boys go for broke. "Angel of Darkness” leads Steady As She Goes off, brandishing Hot Tuna’s trademark: nasty guitar, wry vocal, all underscored by fluid bass. Written by Kaukonen and Campbell, this is a hip-shaker—and a strong social statement, lamenting the plight of young girls on the street. “Innocent light, trapped in the night/ Angel of darkness/ You've got it wrong, you don't belong/ On the cold streets you roam/ Sweet runaway/ There’s no debt to pay/ Angel of darkness/ Find your star/ That's who you are/ Follow it home.” Wouldn’t be Hot Tuna without blues numbers. This time out there’s, among others, Blind Reverend Gary Davis’s “Children of Zion” and “Mama, Let Me Lay It On You.”

As living legends go, Jorma Kaukonen is a pretty down-to-earth guy with laid-back class. Easy going, he was upbeat and affable for a phone conversation about his craft and career.

How’d Steady As She Goes come to be? You just wake up one day and decide to do it?
In a way, yeah. People ask ‘Why did you wait so long?” It wasn’t the right time. The stars aligned.

How’d Hot Tuna start to begin with?
Sort of an accidental thing. Jack and I, of course, been playing together since before rocks and water. Jefferson Airplane was going along. I’d get back to the hotel room, have my acoustic guitar. He had a bass and amp. I’d start [showing] him this stuff I’d been doing [as a] folkie. He figured out all this cool stuff. So, that happened. It got legs of it’s own. I don’t remember where it was. Might’ve been [playing] Fillmore East or something. All of a sudden, in the middle of an Airplane show, Paul Kantner goes, “Why don’t you guys play a song?” I’m, like, “Really?” Maybe he had to go to the bathroom. Anyway, bless him. We started doing it, people liked it. That’s how it started.

Are your lyrics existential? I’m thinking “Star Track,” “Last Wall of the Castle” from Crown of Creation and After Bathing At Baxter’s with the Airplane.
Probably back then, definitely. I grew up in that sort of beatnik, you know, Jean Paul Sartre time. A little less today. A lot of my imagery is still the same.

You and Jack Casady have been together longer than most marriages last. How has that worked out? How has it happened?
Well, it’s lasted longer than my first marriage. And, since I’m not a kid anymore, it’ll probably be longer than my second. Me and Jack, even when we were [teenagers], we’re different guys. But, we’re good friends. We respect each other as men and as artists.

Readers nearly rode me out of town on a rail for comparing “Star Track” to “Death Don’t Have No Mercy.” Would you set the record straight?
“Star Track” is certainly inspired by “Death Don’t Have No Mercy.” “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” is such a powerful song. The lyric is powerful. It sent me on a trip. Carried me a lot of places. As a guitar player, there’s E-minor chords and what not, took me a lot of different places. Very melodic. If you [listen to] “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning,” that’s similar. Reverend Gary Davis [is] a powerful muse for me. No question about it. No question in my mind.

Science specialist a winner

Debby West, Oak Park Unified School District’s science specialist, will be honored at the Friends of Oak Park Schools Education Foundation’s “Friends Play Together” game night.

West led a team of Medea Creek Middle School and Oak Park High School students to victory in two science competitions earlier this year—the Ventura County Idea to Impact Challenge and the USC/Quicksilver QuikSCience program.

Oak Park teams won first place in both school divisions. An Oak Park High School team entered a project called “A is for Algae,” which focused on learning about marine algae and growing a potential biofuel.

Team members for the QuikSCience competition were Michael Ebert, Steffan Kim, Nirupam Nigam, Avyay Panchapakesan, Vivian Rotenstein, Amos Too and Tiffany Wu.

First place in the high school division for the Idea to Impact Challenge was awarded to an Oak Park High School team project called “The Whale.”

The project looked at ships that strike and kill whales in the Santa Barbara Channel and threats to whales around the world. The team raised $1,500 for the American Cetacean Society by selling ceramics made at the OPHS lab, conducting bake sales at elementary schools and through other activities.

Rebecca Gordon, Kathleen McGeegan, Kayla Sadwick, Sam Hirsch, Justin Orens and Jacob Wyner competed in the high school Idea to Impact project.

Medea Creek Middle School students in the Idea to Impact competition also won first place for their project “Paper or Plastic? Neither!” The team examined the hazards on the marine environment associated with plastic bags and how people should use to reusable bags.

Middle school team members honored were Jessica Ji, Yael Karoly, Katherine Kim, Paula Martin, Irena Yang and Jianna Zeolla.

Other Oak Park middle and high school teams won honorable mentions in both competitions. Members of the 14 teams gave lessons to other students, which engaged more than 1,500 students in Oak Park schools. All teams also performed community service related to their projects.

Oak Park Unified School District Superintendent Tony Knight expressed gratitude to West and to Friends of Oak Park Schools for funding the science specialist position and supporting science education in Oak Park.

Firm issues eco-friendly staff uniforms

JAKARTA: Soft drinks manufacturer and distributor Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (CCAI) has issued new environmentally friendly fabric-based uniforms to its employees.

About 10,000 of the company’s employees started wearing the new uniform in April. The uniforms are made from a combination of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and organic cotton.

“The uniforms are made from 50 percent recycled PET and 50 percent organic cotton. Every employee has received three uniforms,” CCAI president director Peter Kelly said.

CCAI collaborated with PT Quicksilver Indonesia to design the uniforms.

“The uniform is not only safe to wear, but also comfortable,” PT Quicksilver Indonesia’s chief product executive Rahmat Sudrajat said.

The company said the PET was made from recycled plastic bottles.

However, because no manufacturer in the country has the capability to produce yarn from plastic bottles, CCAI shipped the raw materials to China for production. At least five bottles are needed to produce one shirt, the company said.

“We hope that this innovation will trigger more demand from organizations and encourage the recycling industry in Indonesia,” CCAI business services director Bruce Waterfield said. (JP/aaa)

MasTec Acquires Canadian Energy Infrastructure Company Fabcor

today announced that it has acquired Fabcor TargetCo, Ltd., and its subsidiaries ("Fabcor"), a Canadian pipeline and facility construction services company with offices in Grand Prairie, Alberta and Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada. Fabcor's pipeline and facility construction services to the oil and gas industry include: new pipeline construction; pipeline modification and replacement services; well-site and compressor station construction services; and gas plant modification and plant commissioning support services.

MasTec acquired all of the issued and outstanding shares of Fabcor for approximately $21.1 million in cash, the assumption of $8.8 million in debt which was subsequently paid off, plus a five-year contingent earnout. Fabcor had a strong balance sheet at closing, with $26.3 million in tangible net worth, $15 million of which was related to pipeline construction equipment. Fabcor has worked for most major oil and gas companies in Canada, including Murphy Oil Corporation, Encana, and Quicksilver. Fabcor was recently awarded a contract to construct a 100 MMcf/d natural gas processing plant in British Columbia.

MasTec anticipates significant opportunities for energy infrastructure work in Canada during the coming years and that Fabcor will provide MasTec the platform it needs to provide those services in a variety of areas.  While Fabcor's initial focus will be on pipeline and facility related projects, MasTec plans to leverage this investment and participate in other areas of the Canadian energy infrastructure build-out.

Jose Mas, MasTec's Chief Executive Officer, commented, "We are very excited about the Fabcor acquisition. Its strong management team and dedicated workforce will provide MasTec with access to the dynamic Canadian energy markets, which we believe will show significant profitable growth in coming years."

Mr. Mas continued, "Our acquisition program is now focused on smaller, strategic companies that can enhance our current geographic or client reach.  Fabcor fits this profile as it provides us with an immediate presence in the Canadian market, allowing us to serve new as well as existing MasTec customers.  We believe that Fabcor is the right fit for our business model, as it will create opportunities and expose MasTec to a very large infrastructure market adjacent to the markets we currently serve."

A financial and operational update of the transaction, as well as financial projections affecting 2011 guidance, will be given in conjunction with MasTec's first quarter earnings call on May 5th at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time.

Additional details are contained in the SEC Form 8-K that is being filed concurrently with this press release.

MasTec, Inc. is a leading infrastructure construction company operating mainly throughout North America across a range of industries. The Company's activities include the building, installation, maintenance and upgrade of energy, communication and utility infrastructure, including but not limited to: electrical utility transmission and distribution, wind farms, solar farms, other renewable energy, natural gas and petroleum pipeline infrastructure, wireless, wireline, satellite communication, industrial infrastructure and water and sewer systems.

He brings with him his children, Pietro Maximoff and Wanda Maximoff, Cyclops' younger brother, Alex Summers, a young mutant with toad-like abilities, Mortimer Toynbee, and Jason Wyngarde, a secretive mutant who is hard to trust. Magneto sees a group of mutant prosecutors led by Graydon Creed attack Mystique and force her to drop he baby into a river. Mystique then describes to him her time in the Triskelion. This urges Magneto to take his mutant followers and Mystique to form the brotherhood of mutant supremacy and start a war against the humans. only the X-Men stand in his way

Raven quickly put him up for adoption before Graydon noticed his mutation. the second she had a few years later, it was Kurt Wagner, he was obviously a mutant as could plainly be seen. his skin was blue like his mother's true form and Graydon realised Raven was a mutant. Mystique was attacked by Graydon and his fellow mutant-haters and dropped Kurt into a river. she was saved by Magneto and she told him of the horrors humanity had put her through. this urged Magneto to create the brotherhood of mutant supremacy. She was his second in command.

Quicksilver: Magneto's son, Erik can hardly stand the sight of him, he bears the face of his mother, who was a beautiful homo-sapien. Magneto despises himself for loving a normal human. he much prefers Pietro's sister, Wanda Maximoff, who is in his opinion, much more powerful and looks a lot less like his human love. despite being hated, Pietro continues to follow Magneto and joins his brotherhood.

Scarlet Witch: Wanda Maximoff is Magneto's daughter. she loves her brother Pietro dearly and tries to defend him from Magneto when possible. She is one of the very few known class-8 mutants (the most powerful mutants). She dates Angel but betrays the X-Men and joins the brotherhood. At the end of the film after Magneto is defeated, she and Pietro beg Xavier for forgiveness which Xavier gives them. he urges them to stop living in their father's shadow and make something of their lives. Wanda mutters something about joining the Avengers

Mastermind: Jason Wyngarde is a shifty mutant who can cast illusions. He is fairly rich and does not seem to have a motive for joining Magneto's brotherhood. it is revealed in the third film he was actually a spy for the Hellfire Club.

Graydon Creed: Graydon is an wealthy australian count who marries Raven Darkholme not realising she is the mutant known as Mystique. When he discovers she is a mutant and he has fathered 2 mutant sons by her, he rallies a group of mutant haters to attack her and he causes her to drop the young baby Kurt Wagner into a river. Graydon and his army are stopped from killing mystique by Magneto. Magneto kills Graydon to make an example of him to other mutant protesters.

Brass jaw, jazz bar, edinburgh

On more than one occasion during horn quartet Brass Jaw’s return to the capital I thought they were going to break into song.

It could have happened in their sizzling arrangement of the Beatles’ Drive My Car, where their trumpet and three saxophones got as near as doesn’t matter to expressing the song’s lyrics anyway.

Or they could have followed one of those dizzyingly tight, spiralling ensemble set plays they specialise in, and where they sound like the Brecker Brothers in their pomp, by chanting “East River da di dah”.

Another time they might, because the self-proclaimed brass boy band are gallus enough to give it a go.

Not that they need to expand their avenues of expression by singing; with four strong musical personalities contributing to the repertoire, there’s plenty of variety in their composing and arranging to make sure that a couple of hours in their company passes with uncommon haste.

Time still may not pass fast enough for Allon Beauvoisin, who puts in a heroic shift on baritone saxophone, anchoring the sound and driving the group with energetic bottom line parps.

He also contributes to the aforementioned variety through the concise, funky Deal With It and the organised mayhem that is The Rochester Rumble.

Like all his colleagues, Beauvoisin is also a superbly accomplished improviser and it’s this ability to create in the moment, be it trumpeter Ryan Quigley stripping paint on the opening Sidartha, altoist Paul Towndrow producing consistently engrossing, quicksilver, left of centre ideas or Konrad Wiszniewski’s bluesy tenor adventures, that gives Brass Jaw an exciting edge as well as a mad sense of fun and grooving pan-jazz credentials.

HALOES, HAT TRICKS AND HOWLERS!

This being Holy Week it was fitting that Elche’s quicksilver little striker, the aptly-named Angel should be heroically celebrated in the City of Palms with his brilliant hat-trick, rightly claiming the match ball as well as his halo in the process.

There was only one change from the Illicitanos’ exciting away draw at Girona last week, reliable full-back Carpio’s suspension meaning Vasco Fernandez was given a run out, Albacar preferred to back-from-suspension Ripa at left back, who was substitute.

The cheaply-advertised entrance prices didn’t really turn on the locals, only 7,366 watched the game, which considering Elche’s sound fifth play-off place in the league has to be disappointing.

Elche started briskly, only 3 minutes had gone when Mantecon’s fierce drive was drilled wide, Kiki Mateo’s mazy run down the left was smothered at the near post, this then countered by Huesca’s long corner on 20 minutes which caught Elche’s goalkeeper Jaime stranded and it was Elche’s turn to scramble the ball away to safety; that effectively was really the last time the visitors seriously bothered the well-organised home defence, Elche taking control in all departments.

On the half-hour, and the Illicitanos’ were on their way; a Xumetra cross was pushed out by goalkeeper Andres, only to be headed back by a rejuvenated Generelo. As Andres hesitated Angel nipped in to loop his header safely over the goalkeeper to deservedly put Elche in front;  indeed he should have made it two four minutes later when clear through but rolled his soft shot agonisingly wide.

Mantecon, Generelo and Kiki Mateo were all booked for niggling fouls as the referee had a word with Xunetra about diving in the box, but didn’t book him - hmmm, interesting, that - no further score before half time - and no howlers – yet!

The second half continued with Elche in the driving seat, and an Albacar free-kick whistled wide. But the referee – El Cerro Grande, no less - decided to alienate himself from the home crowd as on 64 minutes Kik Mateo burst through clear, got to the ball before Andres to push it wide, only to be blatantly brought down by the desperate goalkeeper. Sure he went down theatrically, but it was a clear last-man foul.

However instead of Andres going off, Kiki Mateo got a second yellow for diving and was off himself. Funny interpretation that - and it went down badly with the home fans!

Strangely enough, it didn’t make a scrap of difference to Elche that they had only ten men (let’s face it, they’ve had plenty of practice - though not lately); the spirit was still there in abundance, and Elche continued to dominate. Only 5 minutes after the sending-off, Mr Lightning, our hero Angel did it again as he caught Huesca napping at the back, ran though, and checked before planting a cracker inside Andres’ near post. Elche 2 – 0 and coasting...

With 15 minutes left, off came Generelo to well-deserved applause for once, to be replaced by anchor-man Acciairi. But man-of-the match Angel was not finished yet,

With 7 minutes left he teased, twisted and turned his marker who pulled him down to earn his penalty – and he didn’t get booked for diving -  merely coolly despatching his penalty low into the corner for his well-deserved hat-trick: he never stops working and running. Angel now has nine goals in 18 starts – great striker stats!

With the score safe at 3 – 0 there was just time for a little hilarity. With 5 minutes left Ripa replaced Xumetra and Bodipo for Angel. The new pair combined for Ripa to be left clear – what, five yards out?

He managed somehow to sky his shot so far over the bar it looked impossible, but worse still, more farce was to come as the young sub was then put though one-on-one with only the goalkeeper to beat, but again inexplicably managed to muff it; good job it didn’t matter, and it took the edge of the El Cerro Grande’s misdemeanours – he will look again at the video and see how wrong he got it!

But hey, the Franjiverdes go marching on, now beaten only once in nine  games as they march towards the play-offs.

Next week Elche are away to lowly-placed Salamanca, sweating away just inside the drop-zone with a dodgy home record, winning only 5 of their 17 games. Elche are in great form and fear no-one these days – game on!

The Romance Reader: 'Quicksilver'

"Quicksilver" by Amanda Quick; Putnam (2011), 327 pages, $25.95 (hardcover)

Once again, Amanda Quick takes readers to the shadowy side of Victorian England in her latest installment of the Arcane Society series.

"Quicksilver" is the second in a trilogy within the series.

This three-part story began in Jayne Ann Krentz's contemporary book "In Too Deep," when psychically talented Fallon Jones and Isabella discover ultra dangerous psychically charged weapons that had been created during Victorian times.

This second installment takes us back to the initial discovery of these strange yet deadly weapons by Owen Sweetwater and Virginia Dean. (Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle are pseudonyms for Krentz. She writes historical books as Quick, and futuristic stories as Castle and contemporaries as Krentz.)

Like the other heroes and heroines of the Arcane series, Owen and Virginia use their psychic abilities to pursue evil and evildoers. And in this case, evil weapons.

Virginia has a psychical ability that allows her to "read mirrors." Basically, she can look into mirrors and reveal what they have seen. She uses that talent to make a living for herself, rather like a fortuneteller.

Owen's psychic abilities help make him a good investigator.

When Owen saves Virginia one night, the couple becomes a team, searching for a serial killer who uses psychic talent and psychic weapons. While it's a dangerous mission, Owen and Virginia find time to fall in love with each other. It's a rather tepid courtship (at least in most ways), but by the end, Virginia understands that Owen definitely means business and that his love is pretty absolute.

The world that Quick immerses readers in with this series is a bit different than the usual view of balls and high society courtships with rides through Hyde Park. It's a less glamorous part of that world, with characters that are just on the fringes of that "high society." But that sets the scene for the shadowy world the characters must roam to thwart the bad guys.

HOW IT STACKS UP

Overall rating: 3-plus of 5 hearts. As in previous books in this series, the psychic stuff can become tedious. But the underlying story is interesting, the intrigue is compelling and the characters and their interaction with one another is engaging enough to overlook any wearisome passages.

Hunk appeal: 10. Owen is a rather enlightened guy for Victorian England. He appreciates Virginia's talents and independence. He balances that with his need to protect the woman he loves - and it's another point in his favor that he recognizes and accepts how much he needs Virginia in his life early in the story.

Steamy scene grade: XXXX. May be why he so easily accepted.

Happily-Ever-After: Good. Owen gets to be a hero, and all the loose ends are tied up. Well, at least as pertain to this segment of the trilogy. The final, a futuristic under Krentz's pseudonym of Jayne Castle, is due out in the Fall.

Also this week ...

"Fortune's Just Desserts," by Marie Ferrarella (2011 paperback) 3 of 5 hearts. This April Harlequin book is another in the "Fortunes" series. In this cute, fun and quick read, Wendy Fortune has been sent from her Atlanta home to Texas to end her aimless ways. Her parents prevail on a friendship with the Mendozas to secure Wendy a job in their restaurant. Restaurant manager Marcos isn't happy about it, and doesn't hide the fact that he neither respects nor likes the heiress. But Wendy isn't what he expected, and while he refuses for most of the book to accept that, by the end he not only recognizes her aptitude and talents, he really appreciates the - some more than others.

Quicksilver accelerates Horn River development

In yet another indication the Horn River shale gas field is almost ready for prime time, Houston-based Quicksilver Resources said Friday it has signed transportation deals that will allow it to scale up production from northeast British Columbia.

The Fort Worth-based unconventional gas producers, which was a pioneer in shale plays such as the Barnett field in Texas, said it has created an operating subsidiary to build the gathering pipelines needed to move the gas onto larger pipeline networks feeding Canada and the United States.

“We have the pieces in place to ensure that our vast resource capture will move out of the Horn River Basin to the west through the Spectra system and to the south through the Trans Canadian pipeline system,” Quicksilver chairman Toby Darden said in a statement. “We believe that creating this midstream entity will provide our lowest cost solution for gathering, treating and transporting our commodity to multiple sales points.”

The first part of the puzzle is a 32-kilometre gathering line, which will tie-in to the Spectra Westcoast system to the lower mainland and Pacific Northwest, expected to be operational in May.

On April 11, Quicksilver signed a deal with TransCanada Corp. to build a 100-kilometre tie-in into the Alberta Nova network which can alternatively access the TCPL main line to Eastern Canada and the larger North American grid.

In an interview, Quicksilver vice-president Rick Buterbaugh said current production of about 20 million cubic feet per day is constrained by limited access to third-party pipelines. The tie-ins will allow ensure adequate capacity to ramp up production to 2014 and beyond, he added. “This gives us multiple outlets for our gas,” he said. “We’re always looking for a variety of markets to move gas to, it’s the key to almost any of these developments.”

Horn River has been touted as one of the largest natural gas discoveries in North America, but its remote location near the Yukon border make it relatively expensive compared to other big shale plays in Pennsylvania and Texas that are closer to consuming markets.

The proliferation of low-cost shale production has pushed gas prices to the lowest levels in a decade, which put even more pressure on the economic viability of remote fields like Horn River.

Natural gas jumped seven cents in New York on Friday, to $4.21 US per million British thermal units, but Lower 48 storage levels remain well above the five-year averages.

The U.S. government issued a report Thursday that showed a larger-than-expected stock build of 28 billion cubic feet, which Barclay’s Capital analyst Tom Driscoll called “bearish” in a research report.

“We believe gas price risk remains to the downside as fundamentally the market remains oversupplied and U.S. production continues to grow.

Where other Horn River players like Encana and Apache Corp. have looked at liquefied natural gas exports off the West Coast as an alternative to traditional markets, Buterbaugh said low-cost pipeline transport remains a cornerstone of Quicksilver’s strategy.

The company will continue to pursue Horn River because it has the potential to quadruple the company’s proved reserves to about 12 trillion cubic feet. Despite low prices, Buterbaugh said he believes Horn River can be viable.

“Locking in low-cost transportation is all part of the equation of making Horn River competitive with the other plays,” he said.

Help Quicksilver and Holly Find Lasting Homes

This week, we wanted to take some time to spread the word about a kind, hard-working organization joining in on the fight to save pets’ lives. The non-profit, A Dog’s Life Rescue, works hard everyday to save dogs and other pets from a harsh, undeserving life on the streets.

Volunteer for the organization Noelle Valdivia explains, “A Dog's Life makes a concerted effort to track down homeless animals, catch them, socialize them and find them homes.”

A Dog’s Life rescues animals that are abandoned, abused or neglected and finds these dogs new lives through loving homes. It isn’t easy caring for the dogs and other animals while they are under the care of a Dog’s Life Rescue.

“[We're] definitely a grass roots organization … we have only two employees, our founders,” Valdivia said. “We've been taking on a lot of animals lately and are working to spread the word on our shelter  … We need all the help we can get.”

The non-profit works hard to receive the funds needed to provide these animals with shelter, food and medical attention while they wait for a home. The organization has adoption events every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month at Centinela Feed, 11055 Pico Blvd. in West Los Angeles. A Dog’s Life can make private arrangements for you to meet a dog anytime, if you contact them for an appointment.

The organization is currently featuring Emma—a beautiful and gentle Rottweiler who desperately needs a home. Despite Rottweilers having a reputation for being on the tough side, Emma is a sweet girl who is ready to be loved. For more information on adopting and how you can help  volunteer, please visit A Dog’s Life official website or Facebook page.

Fort Worth's Quicksilver moving ahead in Canada

Fort Worth-based Quicksilver Resources said today that it has begun a “midstream” natural gas pipeline system to transport gas from the company’s wells in the Horn River Basin in far northeast British Columbia in Canada.

The “first piece” of the system was the construction of a 20-mile, 20-inch gas gathering line that is awaiting tie-in to a Spectra pipeline system and is expected to be operational in May, the natural gas and oil producer said. Once the tie-in and new gas compression facilities are completed, Quicksilver expects that production will be unrestricted from four existing gas wells cumulatively “capable of producing more than 30 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.”

Quicksilver has drilled four additional Horn River wells and “we expect to begin completion activities on those wells during the next winter drilling season,” said Rick Buterbaugh, vice president for investor relations and corporate planning.

Quicksilver, which gets most of its natural gas production from North Texas’ Barnett Shale, views its Horn River lease holdings of 130,000 net acres as a prime source of future company revenues.

“The company estimates that our acreage position holds more than 10 tcf (trillion cubic feet) of potential resources,” and could “more than quadruple our existing reserves,” Buterbaugh said.

Quicksilver has executed an agreement under which TransCanada Pipelines will  begin work on a 70-mile Horn River pipeline extension and Fortune Creek Meter Station to be located within Quicksilver’s acreage. The extension, to be completed in 2014, is expected to be a large 36-inch pipeline giving Quicksilver access to a major gas hub.

Dardens' compensation about $4.8 million each

Toby Darden, board chairman for Fort Worth-based Quicksilver Resources, received compensation valued at slightly more than $4.8 million for 2010.

His brother, Glenn Darden, president and CEO of the natural gas and oil producer, posted compensation of just under $4.8 million.

Both had moderately lower compensation than in 2009, when the compensation for each totaled slightly above $5 milllion.

Both Dardens drew a 2010 salary of $440,000. The bulk of their remuneration was in the form of grants of company stock and options and other incentive compensation.

Jeff Cook, Quicksilver’s executive vice president for operations, had 2010 compensation totaling more than $2.5 million, and Philip W. Cook, senior vice president and chief financial officer, had compensation of nearly $2.1 million.

The compensation totals were in a company proxy statement.

Album review: Alison Krauss & Union Station’s ‘Paper Airplane’

There’s something Apollonian, something so clear, harmonious and restrained, about the genre-bridging music of Alison Krauss & Union Station that it’s a wonder it could have sprung from an idiom as unvarnished and earthy as bluegrass.

Three of the songs on the group’s first album in seven years hark back to those roots. All three of them, including a high lonesome remake of Peter Rowan’s “Dust Bowl Children,” are sung by guitar and mandolin player Dan Tyminski. The rest of the record’s 11 tracks feature Krauss on lead vocals, but only the instrumentation, especially the quicksilver call-and-response between Jerry Douglas’s Dobro and Krauss’s fiddle, really hints at the group’s down-home roots.

None of that makes these remaining, subtly filigreed performances any less gorgeous. The title track is an introspective acoustic ballad akin to those on Rosanne Cash’s 1990 post-Nashville classic, “Interiors.” “Lie Awake” has a melody as haunting Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” while “Sinking Stone” is buoyed by an aching chorus and “My Love Follows You Where You Go” is impelled by a rolling banjo run as steadfast as the pledge of fidelity professed in its lyrics.

The most sublime performances here, though, are easily Krauss’s crepuscular readings of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Dimming of the Day” and Jackson Browne’s “My Opening Farewell.” Both songs are inspired choices, especially for Krauss’s ethereal soprano, an instrument that possesses the uncanny knack for being both unbearably light and able to convey such gravitas and such deep wells of emotion.

Rock & Worship Roadshow at the American Airlines Center

Open seating and $10 tickets are normally a recipe for trouble, but never for the Rock & Worship Roadshow, which ended its current tour at American Airlines Center Saturday night in Dallas.

Every band had local ties, either having been formed in Dallas or having band members who live here. So it was a homecoming of sorts, with lots of performers commenting about sleeping in their own beds tonight.

The crowd was energetic and appreciative, and the groups ran through short sets of their faith-directed music. Stage resets were times for conversation and prayer -- and it was amazing how quiet 12,000 people plus can be.

If it was a lift in your spirit you wanted, no one left disappointed. If the positive words didn't come from the stage, they came from the person sitting next to you.

The Rock & Worship Roadshow is a totally different approach to concert tours, and one that works well for the audience and performer alike.

Kemba Challenge, Part II

It's a fact that hasn't garnered a lot of attention in the days leading up to Saturday's NCAA Final Four battle between Kentucky and Connecticut, but having faced the Huskies' Kemba Walker could help UK in its quest to stop the phenomenal playmaker.

Kentucky isn't battling the legend of a quicksilver point guard who never misses a game-winning basket. They're going against UConn's No. 15, who they've seen up close and personal in November at the Maui Invitational.

"I feel the exact same way," UConn coach Jim Calhoun said. "I think sometimes when you go into a game against Kemba, you don't realize the quickness, speed, some of the things he does. Well, they've seen it first-hand, had 40 minutes of it, 29-point game, etc.

"I don't think there's any great, great advantage, but there is an advantage," Calhoun said. "It clearly lies with Kentucky because they felt us before. I'm sure they're saying in their locker room, ‘We can beat these guys.'"

If Calhoun is correct, the one Kentucky player who should benefit most is DeAndre Liggins, the renowned defensive specialist charged with defending Walker in Maui and again on Saturday at Reliant Stadium.

"The thing with me is taking on the challenge," Liggins said. "Being competitive, having confidence that I can stop the other guy."

"You have a 6-6 player with long arms who can guard a point guard, a two-man, a three-man, and if I wanted him to, he could probably guard the four," UK coach John Calipari said. "Whoever is hurting you, he can go guard."

Calhoun has seen this look of the defensive specialist before.

"He feels that he can really stop you," Calhoun said of Liggins. "One of the ways to stop a guy is feeling like you can stop them, not being overwhelmed even before you face the challenge. He's terrific. He's absolutely terrific. He's going to give whoever he plays a very difficult time."

Walker, of course, has seen just about everything this season.

"There are a lot of great defenders on the collegiate level that I've played against. I've seen them all. I faced guys just like him," Walker said. "But he's one of the better defenders because he's extremely active. He's a great on-ball defender with long arms, and he definitely has a height advantage over me. I'm pretty sure he'll try to force me into some tough shots so I'm going to try my best to get the best shots possible."

Plus, Liggins stated publicly he wanted another shot to defend Walker.

"I don't blame him, honestly," Walker said. "He wants another shot. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

"I know it's going to be a difficult, tough night for me," he added. "I'm pretty sure they're going to try everything in their power to stop me. Depending on how they play me is going to be the way I play. I'm just counting on my teammates to give me the ball in the right situations and set up some great screens."

Calhoun, however, sounds a warning to any that might try to stop Kemba.

"If you need to load up and do it with other folks, it's going to cause you problems," the UConn coach said. "In the first NCAA Tournament game, Bucknell loaded up and Kemba had 12 assists, eight or nine at halftime. My point is that he recognizes when you load up.

"Team defense. A lot of stunting. Fake help. Real help. Play it regular. Triangle-and-two. Box-and-one. Zone. Play it red, meaning double team Kemba every time he comes off a pick-and-roll. There are a lot of different ways to do it and we've seen a lot," Calhoun said. "But John's team is too good a defensive team, in my opinion, to give up on what got it here.

"You can't take away everything from a team," Calhoun said. "You've got to make your mind up. Then during the game, you have to make adjustments when things don't happen."

So the stage is set for Walker vs. Liggins, though Calhoun draw the line short of such a declaration.

"It's Kentucky vs. Connecticut," the coach said. "I'll guarantee you right now that there will be a whole bunch of other folks, Josh Harrellson, Alex Oriakhi, Jeremy Lamb, etc., that will have a lot more to say in the outcome.

"It's about two schools," Calhoun said. "Kemba is wonderful, in my opinion the best player in America. But it's about the team. It's the screens and passes we set up to have Kemba do the things he does. It's the people that help Brandon Knight get open. So they may be focal points media-wise and otherwise, stat-wise, but it's two very, very good teams."
